Fantastic Fest Interview: Jason Eisener on Kids vs. Aliens

Kids vs. Aliens, the new feature from Jason Eisener, receives its world premiere at Fantastic Fest this week

There's a Venn diagram: the circles say, "weird gore," "wrestling," and "kids," and at the center is Jason Eisener. "I love that," the director of Fantastic Fest selection Kids vs. Aliens said. "There's a lot of me that goes into this movie."

The new kid-friendly sci fi horror from the director of Hobo With a Shotgun and cocreator of Viceland's Dark Side of the Ring builds out on the idea of his segment for found footage anthology V/H/S/2, "Slumber Party Alien Abduction." In that chapter of the film, a bunch of kids get wiped out by a ship full of fiendish interstellar invaders without putting up much of a fight. But in Kids vs. Aliens, they target the wrong teens when they mess with young filmmaker and wrestling fan Gary (Dominic Mariche) and his big sister, Samantha (Phoebe Rex).

Before its world premiere on Friday night, Eisener talked with the Chronicle about the childhood influences and experiences that shaped the movie

With Eisener having years to dive into the world he created, this ignited a number of other ideas he could see himself pursuing, some of which are even hinted at in the new feature. Kids vs. Aliens will have its world premiere tonight at Fantastic Fest and will be available in early through RLJE Entertainment and Shudder.

&#;That&#;s my hope. I wanted to leave some of these breadcrumbs in the film so that you can see where I have plans for them,&#; Eisener shared with when discussing future stories. &#;I definitely have a universe that I planned. There&#;s, like I said, little breadcrumbs here to tease what&#;s to come &#; This is just the beginning of the journey of that. I hope if an audience likes the movie enough, that I can get another one of these financed, because, to me, this is just one part of a much bigger story.&#;

Opening in theaters this week is V/H/S/2, the follow up to the festival hit V/H/S, which presented a collection of POV shorts as the disturbing set of footage found in an abandoned house full of VHS tapes.   The second installment brings in a new round of filmmakers, including Jason Eisener, to continue the mythology of the mysterious tape collection.  Eisener got his break in the biz when his fake trailer Hobo with a Shotgun was selected to accompany the Canadian release of Grindhouse and subsequently turned into a feature-length gore fest of the same name. His contribution to V/H/S/2, “Alien Abduction Slumber Party”, carries his trademark funhouse sensibilities, but is unique for its lack of onscreen violence.  V/H/S/2 also features shorts from Gareth Evans and Timo Tjahjanto,Eduardo Sanchez and Gregg HaleAdam Wingard, andSimon Barrett.
