  Mikkel Becker is one of the lucky ones—for her, work seems more like play, taking her back to the enjoyment she felt as a child over connecting with animals. Now, as lead trainer for Fear Free Pets, Becker has found a way to live her passion everyday, improving the lives of pets and their humans in the process.

  “The Fear Free mission is preventing and alleviating fear, anxiety and stress (FAS) in pets by inspiring and educating the people who care for them,” Becker explains. “I’m so proud of my father, Dr. Marty Becker, for fathering the movement that has led to improved emotional wellbeing for thousands upon thousands of pets.”

  Fear Free started with veterinary professionals and has expanded its teaching to include other professionals and pet parents. Pet owners can access information on  , while pet professionals (veterinarians, animal trainers and others working with pets) interested in becoming Fear Free-certified can learn more on  . Other certifications will soon be available, including those for shelter professionals, groomers and pet boarding/sitting services.

  Mikkel Becker is the lead animal trainer for Fear Free Pets. She specializes in reward-based training and behavior modification with dogs, cats and occasional other species, including horses, pigs and orangutans. 

  Mikkel is a Karen Pryor Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP), a graduate of the rigorous San Francisco SPCA Dog Training Academy with Jean Donaldson with a certificate in training and counseling (CTC), a Certified Behavior Consultant Canine (CBCC-KA), a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) and a Certified Dog Behavior Counselor (CDBC). Mikkel also majored in communications and minored in sociology at Washington State University. 

  Mikkel is regularly featured in publications that include USA Today, , Woman’s Day, Real Simple and a nationally syndicated newspaper pet column. She was the resident trainer at  and now is the lead animal trainer at  and  Mikkel has coauthored six books, including the most recent release, From Fearful to Fear Free.

  Mikkel Becker

  Mikkel Becker is 's resident trainer and the co-author of six books, including the upcoming "Fearful to Fear Free." She specializes in reward-based training and behavior modification for dogs and cats. Mikkel is a Certified Behavior Consultant Canine (CBCC-KA), a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), a Certified Dog Behavior Counselor (CDBC), a Karen Pryor Academy Graduate, a graduate of the Purdue Dogs and Cats Course and a graduate of the rigorous San Francisco SPCA Dog Training Academy. Mikkel is certified in Fear Free methods and protocols and has her Silver Handling Certificate through Dr. Sophia Yin’s course. She graduated from Washington State University with a major in communications and a minor in sociology.
  
  Mikkel is committed to helping shelter pets both find and remain in a forever home. As the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation's canine evaluator for Washington state, she tours shelters looking for homeless dogs to turn into lifesaving search dogs. She serves as the dog and cat behavior consultant at Homeward Pet Animal Adoption Centerin Woodinville, Washington, where she helps pet owners solve behavior issues with t
