Biography
Peter is a Life Fellow, having been elected as an Official Fellow in He was Professor of Cultural History (now Emeritus), and supervised Emmanuel undergraduates and research students in History. He is a Fellow of both the British Academy and the Royal Historical Society. He has also held the positions of Fellow Librarian and Fellow Archivist at the College.
Peter a Londoner, who converted a schoolboy enthusiasm for the Middle Ages into research on the Renaissance and the seventeenth century. National service in a Malay regiment in Singapore awoke his interest in Anthropology. He read History at St John's College, Oxford, moving to St Antony's College to begin research. He was appointed a lecturer at the University of Sussex when it began () and remained for 16 years before moving to Emmanuel.

I was educated at St Ignatius’s College, Stamford Hill, London, and St John’s College Oxford. I was one of the first junior lecturers to be appointed at the University of Sussex, attracted by the interdisciplinary programme, and remained there for 17 years (). I moved to Cambridge in , where I became Professor of Cultural History. I retired from the Chair in but remain a Life Fellow of Emmanuel College. I am married to the Brazilian historian Maria Lúcia García Pallares-Burke.
I have been a visiting teacher or researcher in Berlin, Brussels, Canberra; Groningen, Heidelberg, Los Angeles, Nijmegen, Paris (the EHESS), Princeton (IAS and Department of History) and São Paulo. I am a Fellow of the British Academy and Member of the Academia Europea; Ph. D (honoris causa), Universities of Lund, Copenhagen, Bucharest, Zurich, Brussels and Oviedo, Honorary Professor of the National University of Colombia, Honorary Fellow of St John’s College Oxford.

Peter J. Burke is a professor in the Department of Sociology. One of the originators of Identity Theory, his research draws on Complexity Theory, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Simulation to understand (1) how individuals, acting as agents with particular identities, come together in interaction to create larger aggregates, groups, organizations and societies, and (2) how these social structures constrain and limit the kinds of actions that individuals can take.
