MK: Your series, The Unwinding, seems to be a genuine and heartfelt start to a photojournalistic career. Was this more an exercise towards your future career, or a way of comprehending and dealing with the emotional struggles of your own family? Perhaps both?
TA: When I graduated from Michigan State in , I had no useful skills or immediate prospects. I had a point of view, I suppose, and an attitude about certain materialI’d been in a Creative Writing programbut I didn’t have the discipline, in those days, to do more than dabble at the standard wannabe stuff: acting and folk music and short story writing. I was a bit of a dilettante, a know-it-all who bussed tables in a Mexican restaurant and wrote desultory feature stories for the local weekly.
By very slow measures, I started making photographs to accompany those articles. After a while, I took up a search for examples of such pictures at their best. The Village Voice became a modelalong with other lefty tabloids like Portland’s Willamette Week and the Chicago Readerbut I found my best inspirations at the library of the local community college, among a photo collection of about a dozen books.
