Saint Raymond was born in Portella, Catalonia, Spain, he was named Nonnatus (meaning not born) because he was delivered by caesarean section after his mother tragically died during childbirth.
Raymonds early life was deeply spiritual, leading him to join the Mercedarians in Barcelona. This religious order, founded by St. Peter Nolasco, was dedicated to ransoming Christians enslaved by the Moors. Following Nolasco, Raymond became the primary ransomer, taking the dangerous journey to Algeria to free these captives.
However, during one of his missions, Raymond faced a predicament. His funds were exhausted, but many still remained in chains. This act enraged the local governor, who ordered him to be executed by impalement.
Raymonds life was spared due to his potential high ransom value, but he was brutally punished: he had to run the gauntlet and endured further tortures for his unwavering faith. After eight long months, Peter Nolasco, his mentor, ransomed him, brin

This miraculous survival made him Patron Saint of childbirth and pregnant mothers. He grew up as a pious man and drawn to the religious life. With his fathers permission, he went to Barcelona and became part of the Mercedarians, an order founded by Saint Peter Nolasco, which aimed to ransom Christians taken hostage by Moors of North Africa. He set forth and fulfilled the mission of his Order by ransoming Christian slaves, which included captives in Valencia and people in Algiers, Africa. He also offered himself as a hostage in exchange of almost 30 Christians when his money was no longer enough to ransom them. While in captivity, he suffered immensely from the hands of the Moors, until his Order ransomed him.
He was nominated as Cardinal by Pope Gregory IX upon his return to Spain, but died on his way to Rome.
