Just a few miles from where his funeral services were held at the historic St. Mark’s Cathedral, Abouna Makary’s good friend and Christian television megastar Sameh Maurice convened a heartfelt commemoration at downtown Cairo’s Kasr el-Dobara Church, where he pastors the Arab world’s largest evangelical congregation. Together, these two ceremonies affirmed that the late priest’s legacy of praise, miracles, and ecumenism will endure among Egypt’s Orthodox and Protestant Christians alike.

On January 11, renowned Coptic Orthodox priest Abouna Makary Younan () died in Cairo of complications from COVID His death quickly followed that of his wife Mama Souna, who suffered from the same illness and passed away on January 7. Based in the old Coptic Orthodox Cathedral of St. Mark in Cairo’s Azbakiyya district, the oft-controversial preacher was famous for his charismatic style, for his miracles, singing, and capacity to perform exorcisms. Abouna Makary’s popularity grew exponentially since the mids, when his sermons and church services began to appear on Christian television channels in the Middle East. For more than fifteen years, he honed a particularly captivating televisual style that touched millions of viewers and influenced scores of preachers on Arabic Christian channels.

His wife passed way on 7 January.

The funeral service for Fr Makary will be held tomorrow 12 January at St Mark’s Cathedral in Azbakiya in Downtown Cairo.

Fr Makary was born Sabry Younan Abdel-Malek on 1 March , in Assiut some km south of Cairo. He earned a BSc degree and a higher diploma in teaching; also a diploma from the Coptic Orthodox seminary, the Clerical College. He went on to work for the Egyptian government for 19 years, then resigned in order to be ordained a priest.

In , Sabry Younan was ordained a priest in Assiut, and named Fr Makary Younan. But he only served in Assiut for a few weeks, after which he was moved to Cairo’s St Mark’s in Azbakiya where he served 44 years.
