Robert W. Sarnoff, former president of NBC and chairman of RCA, died Saturday of cancer. He was
Sarnoff was the eldest son of broadcasting and radio pioneer General David Sarnoff, who founded NBC parent RCA. After a stint with the government and in military service, the younger Sarnoff followed his fathers footsteps into the radio and TV business.
Born July 2, , Robert Sarnoff received his bachelors degree from Harvard U. and, after attending Columbia U.s law school, went to work for the Office of Coordinator Information, which later became the Office of Strategic Services.
During World War II, Sarnoff was an ensign in the U.S. Navy. In , he joined NBC as an account executive. He rose to vice president in and executive vice president under then-president Pat Weaver in In , he became president of NBC after Weaver was upped to chairman.
Sarnoff played an active role in leading the industrys transition to color television, and in April he dedicated NBCs Chicago affiliate as the worlds first all-color television station.
