My first serious read was a strange one very strange for a young boy living right in the middle of the township. I was in Form 1 at Sobukhazi Secondary School and had just joined the Mzilikazi Community Librarys senior section. Why I joined the library when most of my friends and young boys my age were not members, and not interested in becoming members of the library, I dont know even up to this day. Some of my friends and peers even went to their graves without seeing the inside of a public library.
Books were not the in thing for young boys growing up in Makokoba then. Young boys my age played hard, smoked hard, gambled hard, and hustled hard. There was no time to waste, no time for books and what many called girlish activities. The decision to join the library changed the course of my life and steered me away from danger and early death.
So there I was in the library, moving from one shelf to another looking for my first serious read. The library was always a cool place. Last night, the Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre in Harare buzzed with excitement as Raisedon Baya’s critically acclaimed play The Taking returned to the stage, captivating a sold-out audience. This performance followed its recent grand relaunch in Bulawayo, marking a decade of the play’s powerful legacy with a renewed yet familiar touch.

Originally performed ten years ago, The Taking explores Zimbabwe’s complex and deeply contested land issue—a theme as poignant today as when the play first premiered.
The production boasts a stellar cast, including the legendary Zenzo Nyathi, Alex Marowa, Albert Tshuma, Mzingaye Ngwabi, and Lonesome K Tapiwa, whose performances brought depth and intensity to the story.
In a recent interview with earGROUND AFRICA’s Trevor Mawaka, Raisedon Baya reflected on the enduring relevance of the play’s subject matter.
“The story about land is deeply ingrained in Zimbabwe’s history,” he said. “It caused the occupation of our country, the liberation war, and the ‘third chimurenga.’ Land is more than soil—it’s our identity as a country and a people. This issue is like our skin; it’s always with us.”

Raisedon Baya is a writer, Arts critic, columnist, and television producer with several awards to his credit. His plays has been performed by amakhosi Theatre, Rooftop Productions, Bambelela arts, Siyaya arts. Most of his plays have travelled around the world with different Arts companies. His short stories and articles have appeared in local and international magazines. Baya was part of a British Council sponsored writing project called crossing borders and in he part of the Power in the Voice poetry project. Baya has won the National Arts Merit awards (N.A.M.a) eight times. He has won for writing, directing and producing. Baya is a sub sector member for the Culture Fund Trust of Zimbabwe, and also the theatre chairperson for Intwasa Arts Festival ko Bulawayo. Currently he is coordinating the School Playwrights and actors academy (SPaa) - an initiative that seeks to train young people theatre and writing skills. at the moment
