Erik Gunnar Asplund, a distinguished Scandinavian exponent of Functionalism, is regarded as the most important Swedish architect of the 20th century. From to he studied painting at the Royal Art Institute in Stockholm. Erik Gunnar Asplund was, however, always interested in architecture and also attended the Stockholm Free Architecture School. Soon after finishing his studies, Erik Gunnar Asplund opened an architecture practice of his own in Stockholm. Between and Asplund designed several buildings in a style influeneced by Neo-Classicism, including the Scandia Cinema () and the Stockholm City Library (). The furniture Erik Gunnar Asplund designed at that time was also in the Neo-Classical style, as exemplifed by "Senna" (), a chair he created for a public library. In Erik Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz were the joint winners of a competition to design an enlargement of the Stockholm crematorium and the cemetary grounds. Asplund's major work is probably the Stockholm Public Library, constructed between and , which stands as the prototypical example of the smoothly Nordic Neoclassical Swedish Grace movement.
Another important work is the extension of the Gothenburg City Hall building which Asplund started on and finished - it shows his transformation from neo-classical to functionalist architect, a transformation in parallel with other European modernists like Erich Mendelsohn. Asplund found direct inspiration in the work of Le Corbusier.

As a professor of architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology, and a designer often cited for his contributions to Nordic Classicism, Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund (September 22 – 20 October ) was a notable theorist on the most important architectural challenges of his time, first exemplified by his lecture entitled “Our Architectonic Concept of Space.”
Asplund is considered one of the most influential modernist architects of Sweden and was a proponent of the modernist style first seen at the Stockholm International Exhibition of He completed numerous works regarded as prototypical examples of Nordic Classicism and the so-called Swedish Grace movement, including the Stockholm Public Library.
Other notable works include the extension of the Gothenburg Courthouse and his collaboration with architect Sigurd Lewerentz for the design of Skogskyrkogården cemetery.
Acclaimed Finnish architect Alvaar Alto regarded Asplund as a mentor, modeling the initial designs for his Viipuri Library after Asplund's Nordic Classicism.
