Olympe Bradna: From the Circus to the Cinema

Olympe Bradna (Antionette Olympe Bradna, ) was from a famous family of Bohemian circus equestrians. She was the niece of Fred and Ella Bradna, stars of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. Her parents Joseph and Jeanne Bradna were bareback riders in Europe, who later had a dog act; her mother was also trained in opera. Olympe joined her parents in the ring at age 18 months. By at the age of 8, she was a star in her own right and being booked as a single. Her specialty was acrobatic dance, which she performed in Paris (where she was born), at the Folies Bergère and in venues in other world capitals. She was only 13 when she was cast in her first French film Roger la Hone (), followed by Flofloche (). On the strength of these she was given a seven year contract at Paramount in After a three month period of English lessons she was cast as &#;Frenchy&#; in Three Cheers for Love () with Robert Cummings. A helpful p.r. campaign instructed audiences to pronounce her name &#;O-Lamp&#;. Biography

French dancer and actress, who emigrated to the United States where she lived for the rest of her life. Her father, Joseph Bradna, was a Bohemian Czech and her mother, Jana Bradna, was Austrian German. They were circus performers before Olympe began her career, as a young child.

Her parents accompanied her to Sweden, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and France as she danced. She performed "an acrobatic dance" in the Paris, France, production of Hit the Deck. Later she joined the Folies Bergère. She was with that group for eight months and danced at the French Casino in New York City for eight more months. She also danced in Stockholm and other world capitals.

Bradna started her film career in France, then, in , moved to Hollywood, California where she saw her greatest success, signing a seven-year contract with Paramount Pictures. Her screen debut came in Three Cheers for Love (). During her career she appeared in more than a dozen films and was seen opposite such notable film stars as Ronald Reagan, George Raft and Gary Cooper.

Early years

Bradna was born in a dressing room in the Olympic Theatre in Paris, and her full name was Antoinette Olympe Bradna. Her father, Joseph Bradna, was a Bohemian Czech and her mother, Jana Bradna, was Austrian German. (Another source says that her mother was French.) They were circus performers before Olympe began her career. (Jana Bradna had been an opera singer before she joined her husband in the circus.) She was born backstage, in between a matinée and evening performance to vaudevillians Joseph and Jeanne Bradna. Their dog act featured at the Olympia Theatre in Paris -- hence her first name.
