Plant Stress Response
A major project in the laboratory is investigating the responses of plants to biotic (pathogens) and abiotic (ozone, temperature, chemicals) stresses using DNA microarray gene expression profiling and reverse genetics. We have identified more than 1, stress-modulated Arabidopsis genes, and we are studying their expression under various conditions. Among the genes induced by various stresses are signaling genes, transcription factors, and effector genes that include enzymes that alter the cells structure and properties in response to stress. The signaling molecules include MAP kinases and receptor-like kinases. We are suppressing and overexpressing potential regulatory genes to identify the genes under their control. We want to understand the structure of the stress-response gene networks and to explore molecular-genetic approaches to modifying the stress response (see Holter et al., , ).

Nina V. Fedoroff is known for her pioneering work advancing DNA sequencing and is credited with producing one of the first complete animal gene sequences. Her work also has applications for understanding the genes of plants, and advanced cloning and control of molecular mechanisms. She has now focused her research on understanding the mechanisms that make plants resistant to both biological and non-biological stresses, including heat and salt. Her research involves studying the genetic modification of plants, it’s relation to pest control, and crop tolerance. She is also an advocate for destigmatizing genetically modified food. “There’s almost no food that isn’t genetically modified. Genetic modification is the basis of all evolution,” she told The New York Times. “Things change because our planet is subjected to a lot of radiation, which causes DNA damage, which gets repaired, but results in mutations, which create a ready mixture of plants that people can choose from to improve agriculture. In the last century, as we learned more about genes, we were able to devise ways of accelerating evolution.” By Christine Ayala Research Interests: Dr. Fedoroff has carried out research on topics ranging from biochemical mechanisms of transposition, microRNA processing and stress response in plants. She lectures on a variety of topics ranging from modern molecular techniques of genetic modification to the history and future of agriculture. Biography: Fedoroff received her BS from Syracuse University, graduating summa cum laude with a dual major in biology and chemistry, and her PhD in molecular biology from the Rockefeller University. She received fellowships from the Damon Runyan-Walter Winchell Cancer Research Fund and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for postdoctoral work, first at UCLA and then in the Department of Embryology of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Baltimore, Maryland. Working in the laboratory of Donald Brown, Fedoroff pioneered DNA sequencing, determining the nucleotide sequence of the first complete gene.
