CAIRO – 18 January Figures of ancient Egypt are well known all over the world because of their extraordinary contributions to civilization. Egypt Today presents in a series of articles ancient Egypt’s greatest queens.
In the previous articles, Egypt Today shed light on the lives of Tutankhamen’s wife and half-sister, Ankhesenamun; the first Egyptian female ruler, Queen Merneith, also known as Meritneith and Meryt-Neith; and Queen Hetepheres I. Today’s chosen queen is Neithhotep, the wife of Narmer.
Neithhotep is considered the first identified Egyptian queen by historians, according to researcher and author Ismail Hamed.
She was the first queen of the First Dynasty founded by her husband Narmer or Menes, according to researcher, archaeologist and author Joshua J. Mark of Ancient History Encyclopedia.
One of the main reasons for the marriage between Narmer and Neithhotep was due to Narmer’s interest to enhance his authority over the lands of Lower Egypt, as Neithhotep was one of Lower Egypt’s princesses, while Narmer was one of Upper Egypt’s

Merneith
Meret-Neith, Meryt-Neith, Meryetneith, Merit-Neith, Mer-Neith
Meryt-Neith
Datums: na vC
Beroep: Egiptiese heerser ( farao )
Ook bekend as: Merneith, Meritnit, Meryet-Nit
Around the middle of the first dynasty, the king Den may have been preceded by Queen Mereneith (Meryneith or Merneith, beloved of Neith), considered by some to be the first female ruler of Egypt and possibly the world. However, it is unclear whether she reigned alone for a period or reigned alongside her husband Djet (if he was her husband) and then acted as regent for her son Den. She is named as the Kings Mother on a seal impression created during Dens reign, but was not recorded on some of the other kings lists.
Manetho does not refer to Mereneith by name, but he does state that there were eight pharaohs in the first dynasty, which is correct if you include Mereneith as a pharaoh. However, it is also possible that he included Narmer in the first dynasty (and not dynasty 0), and so counted eight pharaohs.
A single clay seal (right) seems to depict her name inside a serekh (reserved for the name of a pharaoh) topped with the symbol of Neith. Her name appears on the Palermo Stone without the title Kings Mother, but as the fragment is damaged and the name of Djer is also followed by that of his mother it is difficult to draw a firm conclusion from
