Chris Jordan
Chris Jordan’s combined passions for conservation, activism, and photography have made him one of the “it” artists of the green movement. Jordan is best known for his large photographs depicting the consumerism, waste, and decay of American society. The artist was raised in Connecticut before attending law school and working as a corporate lawyer for ten years, later resigning to pursue his photography full time.
Jordan’s work, while often uncomfortable and unsettling for the viewer, stands as a bold testimony to the future consequences of the American tradition of mass consumption and waste. In regards to the politically charged statements behind his photographs, Jordan comments that in the beginning, “All I was interested in about photography was aesthetic beauty…places where color appears inadvertently…It’s something that I truly cannot take credit for, finding my way to consumerism as my subject. Because it found me.” His first several collections of works, Intolerable Beauty: Portraits of American Mass Consumption () and In Katrina’s Wake: Portraits of Loss from an Unnatural Disaster () were met with critical acclaim and exhibited in galleries and muse

Chris Jordan lives and works in Seattle, Washington. After spending ten years as a corporate lawyer, Jordan quit his job in in order to pursue photography full-time. His work has been shown in numerous museums and galleries and reviewed in multiple major publications. Jordan has been the recipient of numerous awards including: the Trailblazer Award from the Sustainable Path Foundation, Seattle, WA; Prix Pictet Commission Prize; Ansel Adams Award for Excellence in Conservation Photography; Green Leaf Award from the Natural World Museum and United Nations Environment Programme, Nobel Peace Center, Oslo, Norway; and the Best of Show award, &#;Artists Responding to Violence Against the Earth,&#; from the Museum of Cultural Arts, Houston, TX. For many years Jordan has been interested in the tragedies and ironic complexities of our many forms of waste. His work has tried to edge-walk the lines between art and activism, beauty and horror, abstraction and representation, and the visible and the invisible. If feels worth it to face the external landscapes of the shadow side of our culture, as a way of encountering something internally about ourselves that is otherwise hard to see.
