The Rainbow Nation’s Whites-Only Town
Besides white, perhaps the only other color that gets mentioned in Orania is orange.
Orania, a whites-only town flanked by the majestic and breathtaking Orange River, is about kilometers outside Kimberly in South Africa’s Northern Cape province.
South Africa may have entered its 23rd year of democracy, yet this Afrikaner town has no desire whatsoever to be a part of the ‘Rainbow Nation’.

Orania is secluded, separated and solo.
And so on a sunny Tuesday morning, I drive to Orania with my colleague from Soweto, photojournalist Motlabana Monnakgotla. Like him, I am black South African, from Harrismith in the Free State.

Who knew we would one day pull up into the streets of this arid town?
A rusty signboard greets us about 10 kilometers before Orania. We approach with trepidation, not knowing what to expect from South Africa’s only town with no black residents.

There are no walls, security or gates preceding Orania. No grim militarized borders – a la Donald Trump’s proposed Mexico wall – so now that’s a big relief.

Betsie is ’n slim kind. Sy gaan skool op Middelburg en matrikuleer daar as topleerling in haar klas. Daarvandaan vertrek sy na Stellenbosch om te leer vir onderwyseres. Sy draf die grade kaf. BA cum laude, Onderwysdiploma cum laude, BEd cum laude en MA met Afrikaans Nederlands. Dit is die jaar / En by ’n huisdans loop sy haar vas in die lang Hollander.

'Welkom in Orania' proclaims a mural, painted in white, blue and orange.
But this South African town, in the remote Northern Cape province, does not extend its welcome to everyone.
The colour scheme on the wall - accompanied by the community emblem of a boy pulling up his sleeves - harks back to the old apartheid flag.
Orania, one of the last outposts of racial segregation, is a whites-only enclave.
Around 1, people live in the rural community, established in during the last years of apartheid.

There&#;s a big motif in Afrikaner history about being Israelites. It&#;s not just in the stony-faced Calvinism of their Dutch Reformed Church. Ever since the Great Trek, when ancestors on ox wagons rode into the hinterlands in search of a life free of British control, the cry of &#;Let My People Go&#; has been a Boer mantra. In this light, the high noon of Apartheid could be read as one more Afrikaans attempt to secure self-determination – to wish away the simple fact that, in the long term, history is demography.
Well, demography is now history. They fought. They lost. The end. Afrikaans – once the dominant language of state – is now a crab in the bucket with South Africa&#;s ten other official languages. No longer the brahmins of the civil service, police and army, Afrikaners now have to compete for jobs
