The Indian American Dream: By Putting Family and Education First, Indian Americans Rise

With Jack Dorsey bowing out and Parag Agrawal taking over as CEO of Twitter, Indian immigrants now captain not just Twitter but many of the biggest companies in the tech sector, from Google to Microsoft. In a comment highlighted by many in the Indian press, Tesla CEO Elon Musk picked up on the trend in a Tweet that read, “USA benefits greatly from Indian talent!”

Indeed, Agrawal was born in Ajmer, a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. He joins a growing list of American tech executives of Indian descent, including Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and IBM head Arvind Krishna. 

One way to view the Indian American success in tech is simply as a matter of numbers. “If a dozen of the top CEOs in the world come from a country with 18% of the world’s population, why would I be surprised?” asked Seshadri Kumar recently.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a rapturous reception in New York City on Sunday, speaking to more than 19, people &#; largely Indian Americans, according to The New York Times &#; at Madison Square Garden. In a memorable scene from the indie film American Desi, Princeton freshman Krishnagopal Reddy, a second-generation Indian American born and brought up in a Jersey suburb, struggles to woo a co-ed at a college party when an Indian-born romantic rival intercepts him. In the confrontation that ensues, the competition shoves “Kris,” as he prefers to be called, out of the way and jeers at him with a phrase that thousands of American-born South Asians have heard over the years:

“What’s your problem?” Kris exclaims.

“I got no problem, ABCD.”

“What did you call me?”

“ABCD. An American Born Confused Desi.”

It’s a question that’s since been echoed by many South Asian American millenials intimate with the stinging term firsthand. ABCD. American Born Confused Desi.
