Summary of Sidney Nolan

Sidney Nolan is one of Australia's greatest mid-to-late 20th century painters. A self-styled renegade, Nolan drew on the legacies of European modernism, moving through Post-Impressionism, and Surrealism, to form his own inimitable take on his country's topography and folklore. Nolan announced himself as a force to be reckoned with via a series of landscapes that captured something of the humid and desolate force of the Western Australian Wimmera outback. But it was his series of paintings (reaching a career total of 27) on the infamous Australian outlaw, Ned Kelly, that brought him widespread international acclaim. Nolan also added portraiture to his canon, with his late-life self-portraits presenting the haunting image of a defiant artist battling deteriorating health.

Accomplishments

  • Nolan identified strongly with the notorious 19th century bushranger, Ned Kelly. It was through his fantasy attachment to this violent antihero of Australian folklore that Nolan was able to process "complicated events" in his own life. Nolan stated that his Kelly paintings represented "an inner history of my own emotions".
  • Already well known for his unforgiving w

I found it interesting but the author is so close to Nolan and some parts of it are outright fawning which doesn't seem justified. The many examples of Nolan's self-centredness are presented as a result of his genius being not appreciated by the establishment art world. The shamelessness of his theft of money from his co-workers on an asparagus farm is portrayed as 'honest', because he doesn't hide his self-centredness or expedience, and yet he is dishonest in interviews and when talking about his family and history. In the end, I was thoroughly tired of the apologetics for somebody who seemed like an extremely unpleasant individual. Still, if you can overlook that, I suppose he's a large part of Australian cultural history

Sidney Nolan was born on 22 April , the first of four children of a Melbourne tram driver, Sidney Nolan, and his wife Dora Sutherland. His parents were Australian born, but very aware of their Irish cultural heritage. Later that year the family moved to the seaside suburb of St Kilda, elements of which were later to feature in Nolan&#;s mature art.
In Nolan left school at the standard leaving age of 14 and enrolled in design and crafts at Prahran Technical College. The next year he began working for Fayrefield Hats where he produced advertising and display stands. This technical work gave him an early introduction to spray paints and experimental use of materials. In he enrolled in evening classes at the National Gallery School and within a few years was making plein air paintings within the Victorian impressionist tradition. His interest in art and ideas led him on a more adventurous path. In he met the art patrons John and Sunday Reed and through his involvement with them became a founding member of Victoria&#;s Contemporary Art Society. The same year he married fellow art student, Elizabeth Paterson, the grand-daughter of the artist John Ford Paterson and moved to Ocean Gro

    Biography

Sir Sidney Nolan was one of Australia’s most significant modernist artists, best known for his depictions of the history and mythology of bush life in Australia.
