His father was a sarangi and veena player at the court of the Holkars. His grandfather was a singer at the court of Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. He was initially trained by his father in sarangi. However his interest in singing led to him being trained in the merukhand technique (the use of permutations of any given group of swars). He soon developed his own style of gayaki (vocal style). The Indore gharana that he founded is known for its blend of the dhrupad with the khayal. Amir Khan is known for his three-octave range voice.

We start now to post a number of recordings by the great Ustad Amir Khan. Here his very first LP, the third LP of classical Indian music released by the Gramophone Company of India.

I bought it in the first half of the s in the HMV shop on Oxford Street in London. I never had seen before so many LPs from India. I spend all my money there. If I remember correctly I bought about 20 LPs. Many of them vocal music by artists I only had read about till then and saw there for the first time LPs by them. Only the following year I made it to Southall, a small town next to London with a mostly Indian and Pakistani population. In Southall there were 3 or 4 Indian-Pakistani record shops and that was then even more paradise for a collector.

The video is a presentation from the archives of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. The recording is a rendition of Raga Suha by Amir Khan in a khayal performance with the bol "Piharva More Aaye" set to ek tal with the tarana in teen tal. Ustad Amir Khan () is recognized as one of the most innovative creators in the history of Hindustani classical music. He slowed down the pace of raga elaboration to fill time with delicate and intricate embellishments in the form of khatkas and kan-swaras. This created an experience of music full of depth and beauty. His performances were marked by sparkling alaps which were followed by taans of great speed and complexity. This balance of the slow with fast pace created an aesthetic experience which influenced vocalists and instrumentalists of all gharanas.

On Whole World Music on January 11, , Craig Burk gave this introduction to raga Marwa, sung  by Ustad Amir Khan.

In the realm of classical music of Northern India and Pakistan, the term Ustad is synonymous with Master or Maestro. And Ustad Amir Khan was certainly a master. He is considered by musicians, critics, and connoisseurs alike to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest vocalist of the Hindustani classical tradition of North India.

Amir Khan was born to a musical family in the city of Indore in  He devoted his life to developing a new vocal style, in fact, a new school of musical thought in regard to North Indian raga.

Raga is a word that many of you know. To put it very simply, a raga is founded on a unique combination of notes on which the musician may improvise. It may be compared to the key or mode in which western music is structured, for example, the Phyrgian mode for flamenco improvisation.

Ustad Amir Khan’s style was rooted in an extremely detailed and subtle development of a raga. He would begin this exploration not by working in individual phrases but in individual notes, using his rich voice to explore the shadings of each note in a very leisur
