UNZA Lecturers and Researchers Union happy with the removal of Nkandu Luo
The University of Zambia Lecturers’ and Researchers’ Union (UNZALARU) welcomes President Edgar Lungu’s decision to remove Nkandu Luo from the position of Minister of Higher Education.
In a statement made available to the media, and signed by Kelvin Mambwe, the General Secretary, UNZALARU said that they wished that the President had taken this decision much earlier because the damage that the Former Higher Education Minister has inflicted on the Zambia’s higher education sector over the last two years will take a long time to repair.
&#;Luo was frighteningly arrogant, impervious to advice, incapable of humility, unaccepting of criticism, enthralled by vanity, and oblivious to all these shortcomings with little capacity to recognise or overcome them,&#; read the statement.

Zambian laws do not define the age of marriage-Nkandu Luo
GOVERNMENT has attributed the increased number of child marriages to the dual marriage system in Zambia.
Gender Minister Nkandu Luo said in Mambwe that the customary law and statutes of Zambia does not define the age of marriage.
Prof Luo said that this has contributed to the high number of girls getting married at an early age.
She said that the laws of Zambia state that anyone can get married at 21 or below for as long as they get consent from their guardians.
Prof Luo said this came about through findings by the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) after the launch of the fight against child marriages in Luangeni Constituency.
“The breaking of the extended family and poverty are contributing largely to the scourge,”she said.
Prof Luo however, said that Government has come up with a bill to end child marriages and that it was being debated by various stakeholders.
The minster said that the bill would be taken to parliament later so that the customary law could be revised.

How then did you progress in school?
Prof. Nkandu Luo:
I went through several schools. From Tunduya, I went to Burma Road. Then my parents were transferred to Chisenga Lumbwe what is now called Hill Side School and that’s where I wrote my secondary entrance exams.
I was selected to go to Roma Girls Secondary School. From there I went to Domican Convent and then entered University of Zambia (UNZA) in the School of Natural Sciences for a very short period. This was in /1.
Then I proceeded to the Soviet Union to pursue similar studies. I again entered what is called Restov Medical Institute in a town called Restov On Don. I was there for a year doing my primary, what you can equate to UNZA’s first year in natural sciences.
