Montgolfier brothers
Joseph-Michel Montgolfier and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier were the inventors of the Montgolfière-style hot air balloon, globe aérostatique. The brothers succeeded in launching the first manned ascent, carrying Étienne into the sky. Later, in December , in recognition of their achievement, their father Pierre was elevated to the nobility and the hereditary appellation of de Montgolfier by King Louis XVI of France.
Early years
The brothers were born into a family of paper manufacturers in Annonay, in Ardèche, France. Their parents were Pierre Montgolfier (–) and his wife, Anne Duret (–), who had sixteen children. Pierre established his eldest son, Raymond Montgolfier, later Raymond de Montgolfier (–), as his successor.
Joseph, the 12th child, possessed a typical inventor's temperament—a maverick and dreamer, and impractical in terms of business and personal affairs. Étienne had a much more even and businesslike temperament. As the 15th child, and particularly troublesome to his elder siblings, he was sent to Paris to train as an architect. Montgolfier Brothers, namely Joseph-Michel Montgolfier ( - ) and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier ( - ) were the inventors of the first hot air balloon that safely carried people into the sky and back to earth.
They were children of Pierre Montgolfier, paper manufacturer in Annonay, France, and Anne Duret who had sixteen children. Joseph was the 12th child while Étienne was the 15th. Joseph was a dreamer, and impractical in terms of business and personal affairs - real features of an inventor. His brother, on the other hand, Étienne had more of a knack for business but because he was a trouble to his elder siblings, he was sent to Paris to train as an architect. When their father died in , Étienne was recalled to Annonay to run the family business which he improved in the next 10 years.

The Montgolfier brothers were Joseph-Michel Montgolfier () and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier (). The brothers invented the first practical hot air balloon and conducted the first manned ballooned flight. They were two of sixteen children born to Pierre Montgolfier and Anne Duret. Joseph was older than Jacques, and was known to be an idealist. Jacques was the presentable one with quiet, pleasing manners and a good business sense. The Montgolfier family business was paper manufacturing, which was a technology intensive industry. Jacques made several improvements to the paper manufacturing process, for which the French government granted the Montgolfier family a grant.
The idea of flight first came to Joseph, as he watched laundry drying over a hot fire. He noticed that the fire caused the laundry to float up and wondered if this same phenomenon could be used to create a flying device. Joseph set about to build a box out of very thin wood and covered the sides with a lightweight cloth. They were the children of a paper maker, and while playing with upside-down paper bags over the fire one day, they discovered that the bags went up to the ceiling. This led them to experiment with larger bags and lighter materials. In they made tests covered with silk and linen. On December 14, , they succeeded in an open-air drop of an 18 m³ silk bag, which reached an altitude of m.
