Meriwether Lewis was born on August 18, , near Charlottesville, Virginia. Lewis grew up among the forests and wilderness of the Shenandoah Valley and developed a love of hunting and exploring. Lewis became a soldier at an early age and fought in the Whiskey Rebellion of He soon became an officer in the Army and battled the Native Americans in the Northwest Territory of the new nation. Lewis became very educated about the Native Americans and even learned some of their languages.

Jefferson's Personal Secretary

As a neighbor and friend of the Lewis family, Thomas Jefferson appointed Meriwether Lewis as his personal secretary. He prepared Lewis for two years to explore the lands acquired in the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis studied plants, animals, and navigation at the University of Pennsylvania in preparation. Lewis invited William Clark to co-lead the expedition. Although Congress authorized Lewis as the captain of the expedition, he insisted that he and Clark be considered co-captains during the journey.

Who Was Meriwether Lewis?

Born in in Virginia, Meriwether Lewis was asked by President Thomas Jefferson in to act as his private secretary. Jefferson soon made Lewis another offer — to lead an expedition into the lands west of the Mississippi, which he did after enlisting William Clark. With the help of Sacagawea, the team successfully reached the Pacific Ocean in November of Their journey was famously known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Early Life

Lewis was born on August 18, , near Ivy, Virginia. His parents, Lt. William Lewis of Locust Hill and Lucy Meriwether, were of Welsh and English ancestry, respectively. After Lewis' father died from pneumonia, his mother and stepfather, Captain John Marks, moved him and his siblings to Georgia in what is now Oglethorpe County.

Lewis spent his childhood in Georgia building his hunting skills and spending most of his time outdoors. However, once he reached his early teens, he would be called back to Virginia under the guardianship of his father's brother, to be given a formal education through private tutors. He would go on to college, graduating from Liberty Hall (now Washington and Lee University) in

His father died in of pneumonia, and shortly after his mother remarried and moved the family to Georgia. While living in Georgia, Lewis would often travel to Virginia to manage his family’s estate. Years later, while Lewis was in his late teens, his stepfather also died, leaving Lewis as the head-of-household for his mother and four siblings.

Lewis enlisted in the U.S. Army in , and by he was promoted to captain. While in the army he became friends with a commanding officer, William Clark. In he became Thomas Jefferson’s personal secretary after Jefferson had been elected President in Lewis and Jefferson had lived near each other in Virginia, and had thus become well acquainted. Lewis served in this role until , at which time he was selected to lead an expedition West.

Lewis prepared for his journey by procuring supplies and studying with leading scientists. He studied astronomy under Andrew Ellicott, botany under Dr. Benjamin Smith Barton, surveying and mathematics under Robert Patterson, medicine under Dr. Benjamin Rush, and anatomy under Dr. Caspar Wistar.
