Maurice Ravel was a 19th and early 20th century French composer of classical music. His best known works are Bolero and Daphnis et Chloé.
Maurice Ravel was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire at age 14, and later studied with Gabriel Fauré. His ballet Daphnis et Chloé was commissioned by Sergey Diaghilev. Other pieces include the the orchestral works La Valse and Boléro. Ravel remains the most widely popular of all French composers.
Maurice Ravel was born Joseph-Maurice Ravel on March 7, , in Ciboure, France, to a Basque mother and Swiss father. In , at the age of 14, Ravel began taking courses at the Paris Conservatoire, a prestigious music and dance school located in the capital of France, studying under Gabriel Fauré.

Born in the Basque town of Ciboure, France on March 7th , French composer Maurice Ravel was very influenced by his mother’s Spanish heritage and love of Spanish folk song. From an early age it was clear that Ravel had musical capabilities and his parents encouraged this, paying for him to have piano lessons, as well as instruction in harmony, counterpoint and composition. Whilst he was obviously a talented pianist, he showed a stronger desire to compose. In order to encourage his musical pursuits further, Ravel’s parents sent him to the Paris Conservatory, initially as a preparatory student and then as a piano major. He studied first with Émile Descombes and received a first prize in the piano in his first year (). More generally, however, Ravel saw limited success at the conservatory and although his musicianship matured significantly, his academics were weak. Ravel was unfortunately expelled in , after failing to be awarded a competitive medal in three consecutive years. The Story Of Ravel's Boléro
Before he left for a triumphant tour of North America in January , Maurice Ravel had agreed to write a Spanish-flavoured ballet score for his friend, the Russian dancer and actress Ida Rubinstein ().
The idea was to create an orchestral transcription of Albeniz’s piano suite Iberia. But on his return Ravel discovered that the orchestration rights had been granted to the Spanish conductor Enrique Arbós. Although Arbós generously gave up these rights, Ravel abandoned the idea and set about preparing an original score.
Ravel had long toyed with the idea of building a composition from a single theme which would grow simply through harmonic and instrumental ingenuity. Boléro’s famous theme came to him on holiday in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
He was about to go for a swim when he called a friend over to the piano and, playing the melody with one finger, asked: “Don’t you think that has an insistent quality? I’m going to try to repeat it a number of times without any development, gradually increasing the orchestra as best I can.”
